Concept Statement
A Chorus Line – a show about actors, dancers who are trying to get jobs through an audition process for a show. Background and personal information on characters is discovered as the musical progresses. We learn about actor’s backgrounds, previous experiences and intermittently explore deep thoughts, pantomimes, and actions not heard but seen by audience. The show evolves as actors are cut from the show and others improve their dancing and are picked for the “tour” at the end of the production.
Lighting design will evolve through the show in stages. It will begin with very minimal rehearsal lighting growing brighter and more complex in each section but collapsing back to simple stage lights at the beginning of each section. The final number “one” is the most extravagant combination of lights and actors. Lighting will flow through numbers but also incorporate typical dance lighting.
This show will use a typical dance plot – side light from booms, straight on front light, and top light but also front light at 45 degrees from the balcony for a “realistic” light from everyday life. This will act as if the exterior world has influence and effect on the inside of the theatre. Zach’s table down stage right will have a special cover light and a light from house left will be used to acknowledge his influence on everyone. The lighting positions in this theatre structure inhibit the choices with its limitations. However, with borrowed instruments from USD, direct front light is possible in two colors and by construction of several booms- positions for direct side light is possible. Saturate colors will be used for dance side light in pink and blue to enhance mood and the “fun” parts of the musical. Footlights are used as slight illumination and as a tribute to the original ideas used in the 1990s by Tharon Musser. Our director wanted to be true to the original ideas and script so lighting will try to reflect that. Use of follow spots and cueing as described in the script will be followed. Research uncovered several color ideas by the original lighting designer and will be incorporated if possible.
